1000 true fans willing to spend $100 per year on your work means you’re making a living. Artists can use their ability to directly interact with lesser fans (for example through blogs) to convert them to true fans. In other words, making your living from your art might be more about building that core dedicated niche fan base than concerning yourself with the long tail (or the marketplace) as a whole. You want dedicated fans (like Springsteen fans) who are willing to go that extra distance to see your work or pay that little extra for an experience. 1000 true fans are worth cultivating.
