Ambient Signifiers
Ross Howard on Boxes and Arrows has an article on Ambient Signifiers - extra information in the design which leads the viewer / user. For example following the blue line or following scents in different areas to generate assurance. Ambient signifiers are just as good for web design and worth thinking through. Often the subtle background cues are as effective as the signage.
